SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Kamryn Chasnis owns a baking business, teaches cooking classes, writes a recipe column and has competed in two culinary competitions on television shows.
And she's only 13 years old.
"I've always loved cooking and baking," said the Saginaw Township resident, who recently started eighth grade at White Pine Middle School. "I just like it. It's something I don't really think about doing, I just do it."
She's the owner of Kamryn's Creations. She has a website, a public figure Facebook page and business cards.
She prefers cooking, especially seafood, but baking is how she earns money to one day attend culinary school. Half of her earnings go toward savings and half go to charity. She recently donated 48 backpacks filled with school supplies to the City Rescue Mission of Saginaw and Mustard Seed Shelter for children in need, the Saginaw News reported.
Kamryn's Creations makes custom cakes, including wedding cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other desserts.
Her grandmother, Clara Martin of Chesaning, taught her to bake. She learned how to cook by watching food TV and YouTube videos.
"I watch all of them," Chasnis said. Some of her favorite shows are "MasterChef" on FOX and "Chopped" and "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" on Food Network.
Last year, Chasnis appeared on the FOX TV show "MasterChef Junior." She prepared a brown sugar salmon dish while competing in the first challenge on the season-five premiere. Celebrity chef Christina Tosi said her dish was "delicious," but Chasnis did not advance to the next round.
Chasnis and Martin were featured in the premiere episode of Discovery Family's new baking competition series, "Bake It Like Buddy" featuring "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro at 9 p.m. on Sept. 8.
She teaches cooking classes for kids at Crane's L&M Appliance Center, 3260 Bay Road. The business built her a demonstration kitchen inside the store. Class offerings include "Make Your Own Chinese Takeout," ''Unicorn Cupcake Decorating Class," and "Decorate a Melting Ice Cream Cake." The cost to participate ranges from about $15 to $20 and includes all supplies and ingredients.
On Aug. 30, Chasnis gave MLive/The Saginaw News a quick cake decorating lesson, demonstrating how to pipe pink and purple frosting rosettes.
"It's a very simple thing that looks like it took a lot of time and effort," she said.
Area businesses have noticed Chasnis' skills, too.
"I've gotten job offers already," she said.
When she's not in the kitchen, Chasnis is busy with school and pompon.
In a few years, she plans to attend the Saginaw Career Complex where she can hone her skills. Later, she hopes to attend The Culinary Institute of America in New York and, someday, own and cook in her own seafood restaurant and bakery.
Her mom Cassandra Chasnis doesn't share her daughter's passion for cooking, but helps with the business side of things. She said she encourages her children to pursue their interests and finish what they start.
